What should I wear to my family photoshoot?

Wondering what to Wear for Your Family or Maternity Photo Shoot?
As a maternity, wedding, and family photographer based in Lismore, New South Wales, I'm often asked by clients what they should wear for their upcoming family & Maternity photo session. While there's no single perfect outfit that works for every family, there are some tips I can share to help you look and feel your best in your portraits.
Coordinate Without Matching Exactly
You don't want everyone wearing exactly the same outfits, as that can look too uniform and take away from everyone's individual personalities, but if you want some photos with matching outfits for you and your kids bring them along. Choosing a similar color palette helps give your family photos a polished look. Pick 2-3 complementary colors and have each family member's outfit incorporate at least one of those colors. Neutrals like beige, gray, cream, navy, and denim work well as base tones. See some examples over to the left.

Stick to Solids or Subtle Patterns,
Nothing worse than turning your photoshoot into free advertising for Billabong! Busy patterns and logos can be distracting in photos and draw the eye away from your faces, we want you to be the main focus! Opt for solid color tops or subtle patterns like thin stripes, gingham or floral prints. Layered outfits with jackets or cardigans can add visual interest, and might be handy to bring as we enter Autumn and soon Winter here in Lismore.
Choose Comfortable, Flexible Fabrics
Family photo sessions often involve moving around, sitting on the ground, cuddling up close, etc. You'll want to wear flexible, breathable fabrics that allow you to move and pose easily without restricting or clinging. Cotton, linen, and quality stretchy fabrics work well, I tend to opt for Jeans myself but I basically live in Jeans haha.
Don't Forget About Shoes
Footwear shouldn't be an afterthought! You'll likely be walking around outdoors during our session. Make sure to wear shoes you can move comfortably in, whether that's flats, sandals or sneakers, even some nice boots.
